6 Signs That Your Gutter System Needs Replacing

May 15, 2018 | Gutters

Unlike a burst pipe, an electrical shortage or a malfunctioning appliance, problems related to your gutters can go completely unnoticed – until you’re faced with costly repairs involving damaged windows, doors or even your home’s foundation.

While it’s important to make sure you’re regularly inspecting and cleaning your gutter system, you also will need to check for signs that it needs to be repaired or replaced. Like any other parts that make up your home, your gutters will eventually need to be upgraded.

Here are 6 signs that it’s time to replace your home’s gutters, which are designed to ensure water is flowing away from the structure of your home.

1. Gutters that are sagging. This is one of the most noticeable warning signs that your gutters are not functioning properly. If the gutters are sagging or pulling away from your home, there’s a chance that the gutters are full of water or debris or that they’re not properly pitched. If the problem persists, even after a cleaning or minor repairs, it’s time to replace your gutter system.

2. Rusting or peeling paint. Whether you notice obvious signs of rust or peeling paint, there’s a likelihood that your gutter system is starting to be compromised. Rusting gutters are typically caused by water that’s not flowing through properly, also known as sitting water.

3. Cracking or splitting. If you start to notice tiny cracks or splits, these are signs that there will be more to come as water continues to flow through the gutters. You can have the problem addressed immediately by fixing any cracks or holes with sealant, but this may not be a long-term solution. Consider a gutter system replacement since deterioration of your gutters could eventually lead to damage to your home’s structure, including roof shingles, the foundation and fascia boards.

4. Broken fasteners. If these metal pieces, which fasten your gutters in place, break or fall off, you can address the problem by replacing them. However, if the problem persists, it may be an indication that the structure of your gutter is old and that they’re in need of replacement.

5. Pooling water. Take the time to look at your gutter after a storm. If water is spilling out from the gutters, that means that they’re not functioning properly. Have them inspected for repairs or a replacement. It’s important to ask an expert about the best option.

6. Leaking or water damage. If you start to notice leakage or water damage inside or outside the home, there’s a possibility that your gutters are malfunctioning. Tell-tale signs could be damage to your landscape or water damage in your basement. It’s important to have the problem addressed immediately.

An investment in a new gutter system could have significant payoffs. By taking the time to inspect and replace your gutter system, you can avoid significant damage to your landscaping and home.
